Booking Amtrak Family Room tickets from Dallas to Chicago Union Stations felt exhilarating. My cousin’s wedding in Chicago a perfect excuse to take the train overnight. After flying back one-way, I wish I had booked the train round trip!
The one-way trip lasted 22 hours. Our room composed of two pull down cots and a pull out twin bed, with windows on either side. The food (dinner, then breakfast and lunch) was included with our first class ticket.
My son, who is three, loved it. You could see the gears turning in his head with questions. My daughter, who is one and a constant ball of motion, made many friends walking up and down the aisles. I loved watching the different types of passengers interact; everyone seemed to want to learn a little bit from their fellow travelers. I also loved the menu selections for dinner right after we boarded. I had the risotto and my husband had a steak. The kids loved the mac and cheese!
The only downside for us, the room’s AC did not work. We had to keep our door open for air circulation. The room’s windows also desperately needed power washing from the outside. The café and dining cart had clean windows and working AC, so we ended up hanging out there.
My craving for adventure satiated, I deserve a badge for expert packing! My husband deserves a badge in baby wrangling!
